Cirque du Soleil blends ice and circus again with its newest ice skating show, Axel. Axel is like a big arena rock show on ice. Stunning ice skating, acrobatics, silks, trapeze, music, singing and costuming combined together to bring a truly memorable and world class performance.

The all-ice stage has a vague AXL guitar shape. Triangular video screens hang in the back of the stage, and color changing lights line the sides.

The story follows a young man, Axel, who loves music and graphic arts. He falls for the captivating Lei, but then her light is stolen by the villain Vi. They have to race through colorful worlds to rescue her light.

The story plays out like a video game or a comic book, with a soundtrack of classic pop songs that you’re sure to recognize. As in all Cirque shows, there is the usual pre-show clowning around. Axel’s robotic dog comes out to play, getting the audience to throw a ball for him to fetch. The figure skating routines are as vibrant and unique as the set design, and of course, there are some axels in the routines.

And have you ever heard of stilt skates? These blades have to be at least a foot tall. That’s a whole new kind of balancing act! Cirque’s classic circus elements and death-defying stunts are all there too, with the added element of blades! You’ll see a balancing act on a ladder; ribbon dancers, but with metal chains instead of ribbons; and even a contortionist holding a handstand while on a rapidly spinning plate. A must see!
