Driving Miss Daisy

Driving Miss Daisy

at Barter Theatre

April 14, 2020 (Tuesday)

"A funny, touching, and totally irresistible comedy..”

Driving Miss Daisy is a warm-hearted, humorous  and affecting study of the unlikely relationship between an aging, crotchety white Southern lady,  and a proud, soft-spoken black man. Playwright Alfred Uhry received the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for  Drama for this work.

When an elderly Jewish widow living in Atlanta  demonstrates she can no longer drive, her son insists she allow him to hire a driver, which in the 1950s meant a black man. Miss Daisy resists any change in her life but her son hires the driver, Hoke, anyway. She refuses to allow him to drive her anywhere at first, but Hoke slowly wins her over  with his native good graces. The drama covers over twenty years of the pair's life together as they slowly build a relationship that transcends their differences.
