Island Life

A tour to Mackinac Island is a journey to the best parts of the past. On Mackinac Island, the automobile never replaced the horse and carriage. Residents and guests are limited to transportation by horse and buggy or bicycle and foot.

Globe Treks guests got the chance to relive the pleasures of an earlier, simpler, and slower lifestyle including afternoon tea and sitting in a rocking chair on the porch of the Grand Hotel and enjoying the fresh air and breath-taking views. Our tour departed on June 1, 2018 and returned June 7, 2018.

Mackinac Island, Michigan covers 3.8 square miles and is located in Lake Huron, at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac, between Michigan's upper and lower peninsula.

The most famous destination on the island, is the historic and iconic Grand Hotel which opened in 1887 and is still totally in tune with the slow-paced island lifestyle and provided our guests with elegant and luxurious lodging. Riding in one of the hotel's horse-drawn carriages is the most enjoyable and authentic way to see the island.

Globe Treks guests enjoyed afternoon tea in the Grand Hotel's lovely parlor. In the 1840's, afternoon tea (not to be confused with high tea) became popular as a way to break up the day and enjoy a snack between lunch and dinner. Tea, sherry, champagne, finger sandwiches, scones and other pastries delighted our group of guests.

Our tour also included a stop at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan followed by dinner at the Bavarian Inn and Lodge in Frankenmuth, Michigan.
